About Me
Matt Yoon
Growing up a 4th-generation Korean American in Southern California, I devoted much of my childhood to becoming a professional baseball player - throwing hundreds of pitches, hitting thousands of balls, and spending countless hours playing Wiffle Ball with my best friend until the sun went down. When that didn’t pan out, I decided I wanted to become a famous YouTube celebrity. I obsessed over video content, camera equipment and learning new techniques. While neither came to pass, I came to the realization that I should probably focus on my academics - but video stuck with me.
After being accepted to Cal Poly, I transferred in and shortly considered dropping out to attend film school, but I decided to and stick it out and graduated with a degree in journalism. For my senior project, I directed a short film documentary on gang prevention in the Central Coast, which has more than 467,000 views on YouTube and is used all over the country by different law enforcement agencies and educational institutions. That project kicked off my freelancing career after graduation and I was able to scrape by and stay in SLO.
After freelancing on small projects here and there, my big break occurred when I collaborated on a video with the university president and it caught the attention of the university’s marketing boss. After freelancing for her for less than a year, her boss created a position and hired me full-time in 2014 and I’ve been there ever since to lead the marketing, strategy, and production of video for Cal Poly’s Communications and Marketing division.
In my spare time, you can find me BBQing at home for my wife, serving at our church, documenting every aspect of our daughter’s life.
